The Maharashtra Forest Department checked the accused’s mobile phone after which the incident came to light. In fact, officials found a recording on the defendant’s phone in which they were seen gang-raping the monitor lizard. In fact, forest officers stationed in the Sangli Forest Reserve tracked down the defendants using CCTV footage, in which they are seen wandering through the forest. Officials who spoke about the incident said the three accused had come from Konkan to Chandoli village in Kolhapur to hunt. According to officials, the defendants will be presented in court and appropriate legal action will be taken against them.

The Bengal monitor is a reserved species under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. If the defendants in the case are found guilty, they can be jailed for up to seven years.
