HYDERABAD: Chikoti Praveen, who is at the center of a high-profile investigation into casinos and gambling by the Law Enforcement Directorate, is apparently also a wildlife enthusiast and guardian of some exotic species of animals.

Like photos of him with a ball python and an African iguana on the news, based on a complaint, forestry officials sprung into action to check if there was illegal containment of alien species on his farm located at Saireddigudem in Kadthal mandal of Rangareddy district on Friday.

Forest officials were amazed to see several exotic species like the iguana, different species of lizards and other reptile family animals.

“There was a mongoose, different types of large dogs, exotic spiders, horses (including crossbred horses), swans, ducks, parrots, doves, pigeons, an ostrich, cows and buffaloes on his farm. It is a place that one would be impressed after visiting,” said J Hema, assistant chain forest officer from Kadthal, who was part of the team that carried out the search until late Friday evening.

Hema said Praveen had obtained permission to domesticate all exotic species through an app launched by the Center last year, to enable animal lovers to protect and domesticate them. An interesting revelation from his social media handles is that he named his horse after his favorite Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie. Hema told Express that Praveen takes good care of all the animals, some of which are caged during the day and left loose in a room at night.

“He not only fed them, but also ensured their good health by administering medicine when needed,” she added, also pointing out that the exotic species among the 20 animals found, were imported from other countries. She said that as there was nothing illegal in what he was doing, he will not be charged with any crime under wildlife protection laws.
